Canadians Slow Eh?

What a boneheaded move!

…and perhaps an apology.

Take a right on “Too Damn Far Rd”

Bike trails often have “edgy” names, sometimes denoted with little signs. If it’s on a sign, I’m mapping it.

Unmapped Places of OpenStreetMap – Hall of Fame

Interesting.

I see Hong Kong misses because of three remote villages. That’s “villages” in the local lingo, but almost certainly hamlets in the OSM world. (Wiki says village is 1000+ people.)

BTW, my own region (Alberta, Canada) is vast farmland with scattered hamlets, almost uniformly labelled Village by an old import. Or Town when Village is more appropriate, etc. I’m not sure what to do, if anything, about that. It might be a global problem, and that’s bigger than I’m willing to take on.

Issues with Japan imports

PS, it may be the SImplify command that removes those tags.

Issues with Japan imports

JOSM seems to have a (hidden?) list of deprecated tags that it keeps under cover.

I’ve noticed (coincidentally today), while browsing my own work in achavi, that when I touch a highway to edit a tag, JOSM also removes two tags, geobase:datasetName and geobase:uuid. These are from old imports, and I assume they’ve been declared utterly useless - and thus removed without comment.

That would explain the “remove obsolete tags” or somesuch that I keep seeing in my command history. It’s nothing I’ve done knowingly.

How to track and encourage contribution?

Marking tiles dirty is a half-broken-down mess. Even with the tricks mentioned above (in Firefox, View Page Info, etc.), sometimes it works, sometimes not. Zoom levels 11 and 12 are in their own barely-functioning world, and they’ll update when they’re darn well ready. Something like two weeks. Yet I’ve just discovered I can /dirty zoom level 10 (!) and see results instantly, while 11 and 12 remain asleep as always.

That was my discovery yesterday, and suddenly I could see immediately what area I’d just worked on, and which to hit next. Today that stopped working. Argh!

Being able to see what you’ve just done - and by implication, what you can work on next - is a HUGE motivating factor.

When it works.

(Semi) automating street name expansions

Undoing automated work (for reasons given directly above) is even MORE tedious than clicking a GO button on a script.

(Semi) automating street name expansions

Hi.

Please do not automate expansion of suffixes like “NW” to “North-west” without first verifying that the municipality actually uses the more verbose version (mine doesn’t, the official names are Blah Blah NW), and secondly, checking the wiki for local practice.

Calgary and Edmonton, for example.
